Marriage Renewal Prayer

Understanding the Marriage Renewal Prayer

In the Islamic faith, marriage (nikāh) is not only a sacred contract between two individuals but also a profound spiritual commitment that impacts families and society as a whole. Sometimes, couples feel the need to refresh the spiritual essence of their relationship. The “Marriage Renewal Prayer” is believed to serve exactly this purpose—renewing one’s iman (faith) alongside the marital bond. Certain Islamic sources mention that reciting this prayer three times can symbolically revive a marriage, akin to having just performed the original ceremony.

Significance of the Marriage Renewal Prayer

Marriage creates a profound connection between spouses, and nurturing this connection through prayer can greatly enhance the marital bond. Engaging in the act of renewing one’s vows and reaffirming faith not only fosters spiritual closeness but also strengthens mutual respect and love. This prayer underscores the importance of renewing intention: staying mindful that our union is sanctified by God and guided by faith.

The Prayer Text: Arabic, Transliteration, and Translation

Below is the text of the Marriage Renewal Prayer, which, according to certain narrations, should be read three times. Feel free to observe a short act of worship, such as performing two rak‘ahs of prayer, before reciting. Remember to maintain sincerity in your heart, focusing on both your faith and your marriage.

Transliteration

Allāhumma innī urīdu an ujaddida’l-īmāna wan-nikāḥa tajdīdan
biqawlī lā ilāha illallāh Muḥammadun Rasūlullāh.

English Translation

“O Allah! Through my declaration ‘There is no god but Allah, and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ I intend to renew my faith and my marriage.”

Best Practices While Performing the Prayer

  • Sincerity of Intention: The acceptance of any prayer depends on the purity of one’s intention. Approach this prayer wholeheartedly, asking for God’s guidance in renewing both faith and matrimony.
  • Awareness of Faith: This prayer includes the shahādah—reaffirming the foundation of Islam. Keep in mind that the act of renewing one’s testimony of faith is as significant as the marriage bond itself.
  • Threefold Recitation: Some narrations mention reciting it three times. Each recitation should be a conscious reminder of your commitment to your spouse and to the divine covenant that unites you.

Sources and Narrations

While the specific phrase “Marriage Renewal Prayer” may not appear verbatim in classical texts, Islamic scholars reference similar supplications in works focusing on marital harmony and spiritual life. Key scholarly works emphasize rearticulating the shahādah as a means to refresh and solidify one’s faith, which, by extension, can imbue one’s marriage with renewed spiritual vigor.
