Daily Prayers For Protection From Jinn And Satan

Islamic Prayers | In the hustle and bustle of life, we sometimes need a spiritual sanctuary, a shield to protect us from unseen dangers. Especially the negative effects, whispers (waswasa), and traps of jinn and Satan, which are part of our belief system, can be a source of anxiety in our spiritual world. Fortunately, our Almighty Lord and His Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) have provided us with invaluable guidance on how to protect ourselves from such negativities. With some simple yet effective steps and prayers that we can easily implement in our daily lives, we can seek refuge in Allah from the evil of these unseen beings and create an atmosphere of spiritual peace and security. Let’s explore together the ways to put on this spiritual armor.

A Spiritual Armor: Being In A State Of Ablution (Wudu)

Striving to be in a state of ablution (wudu) in our daily lives is the first spiritual shield we build against the negative influences of unseen beings. Ablution is not just physical cleanliness but also a means of spiritual purification and protection. Constantly being in a state of wudu elevates a person’s spiritual energy and makes them more resilient against the influences of Satan and malevolent jinn. Of course, this alone may not be sufficient; however, when combined with regularly performed prayers (salah) and the supplications we constantly make, ablution becomes a fundamental step that further strengthens this spiritual protective shield. It’s as if we have enclosed ourselves in a spiritual fortress.

The Strongest Fortress: Remembering Allah (Dhikr)

Remembering Allah, that is, engaging in dhikr, is the strongest fortress a believer can seek refuge in against Satan and his whispers. When our hearts and tongues are occupied with the names of Allah and praising Him, it becomes difficult for Satan and his helpers to approach us. Our Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) beautifully illustrated this truth with an example in a hadith narrated by Harith al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him):

“…Allah commanded you to remember Him. The parable of that is a man whose enemy is pursuing him quickly. He comes to a strong fortress and protects himself from his enemy. Likewise is the servant; he cannot protect himself from Satan except by remembering Allah.” (Tirmidhi, Amthal, 3)

Dhikr is not just repeating certain words, but also keeping Allah in mind at all times, contemplating His greatness and power. When Satan’s whispers or evil thoughts crowd our minds, turning immediately to our Lord and seeking refuge in Him is the most effective way. The Holy Quran states this situation as follows:

وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Wa immâ yanzaghannaka minash-shaytâni nazghun fasta’idh billâh, innahu huwas-samî’ul ‘alîm.

“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Fussilat, 41:36)

This verse teaches us to say “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim” (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan) the moment Satan’s whisper is felt. This phrase is more than just simple words; it is the key to turning to our Lord with complete submission and entering His protection.

Also in Surah Al-Mu’minun, it is recommended to seek refuge in Allah not only from Satan’s incitements but also from the very presence of him and the jinn from his progeny near us:

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ

Wa qul rabbi a’ûdhu bika min hamazâtish-shayâtîn.

Wa a’ûdhu bika rabbi an yahdurûn.

“And say, ‘My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,”

“And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.'” (Al-Mu’minun, 23:97-98)

This supplication is a powerful refuge against both the whispers that come while awake and the negative spiritual influences that may be felt during sleep or when alone.

Placing Our Homes Under Spiritual Protection

Our homes are our sanctuaries where we find peace and feel safe. However, it is necessary to place these spaces under spiritual protection as well. Satan and his helpers try to find a place for themselves, especially in places where the name of Allah is not mentioned.

Saying Bismillah When Entering The Home

Saying “Bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim” (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) upon taking the first step into the house is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep Satan and malevolent beings away from our homes. A hadith narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) strikingly highlights the importance of this matter. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When a man enters his house, and mentions Allah’s name upon entering and upon eating, Satan says (to his followers): ‘You have no place to spend the night and no supper.’ But if he enters without mentioning Allah’s name upon entering, Satan says: ‘You have found a place to spend the night.’ And if he does not mention Allah’s name upon eating, Satan says: ‘You have found a place to spend the night and supper.’” (Muslim, Ashribah, 103; Abu Dawud, At’imah, 16)

This hadith shows how much spiritual protection even a simple “Bismillah” provides, preventing Satan from sharing our home and sustenance.

Supplication Of Trust (Tawakkul) When Leaving The Home

It is also important to entrust ourselves to Allah’s protection when leaving the house. As we step out into the street, we should seek refuge in our Lord against all kinds of dangers, accidents, calamities, and of course, the evil of Satan that we might encounter. The Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended reciting the following supplication when leaving the house. It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever says when he leaves his house:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

Bismillâhi, tawakkaltu ‘alallâhi, lâ hawla wa lâ quwwata illâ billâh.

‘In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no might or power except with Allah,’ it will be said to him (by an angel): ‘You have been guided (by Allah’s name), you have been provided for, and you have been protected (from all evil).’ And Satan will stay away from him.” (Tirmidhi, Da’awat, 34; Abu Dawud, Adab, 103)

This supplication is an expression of complete submission to Allah, and it both guides the reciter and protects them from all kinds of evil.

Shields Of The Quran: Ayat Al-Kursi And Amenerrasulu

The Holy Quran, in its entirety, is a source of healing and mercy. However, some surahs and verses have special virtues, particularly concerning protection from the evil of jinn and Satan. Surah Al-Baqarah is one of the prominent surahs in this regard. It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Do not turn your houses into graveyards (by not reciting Quran in them). Verily, Satan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim, Musafirin, 212; Tirmidhi, Fada’il al-Qur’an, 2)

While reciting the entire Surah Al-Baqarah holds great virtue, reciting two specific parts is highly recommended for protection: Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah, 2:255) and Amenerrasulu (Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286).

Ayat Al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

Ayat al-Kursi is one of the most magnificent verses of the Quran, describing Allah’s unique attributes, His majesty, and how His knowledge and power encompass everything. It is believed that reciting it before sleeping or during the day protects the reciter from all visible and invisible evils, by Allah’s permission.

Allâhu lâ ilâhe illâ huwal hayyul qayyûm, lâ ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa lâ nawm, lahû mâ fis-samâwâti wa mâ fil ard, man dhal-ladhî yashfa’u ‘indahû illâ bi idhnih, ya’lamu mâ bayna aydîhim wa mâ khalfahum, wa lâ yuhîtûna bi shay’in min ‘ilmihî illâ bimâ shâe, wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samâwâti wal ard, wa lâ ya’ûduhû hifdhuhumâ wa huwal ‘aliyyul ‘azîm.

“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi (Throne) extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

Amenerrasulu (Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286)

“Amenerrasulu,” the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, contain the fundamental principles of faith, and it has been promised that reciting them, especially at night, will protect a person from all kinds of evil. It is narrated from Nu’man b. Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He sent down two verses from it to end Surah Al-Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a house, no Shaitan (devil) shall come near it.” (Tirmidhi, Thawab al-Qur’an, 4)

Âmanar-rasûlu bimâ unzila ilayhi min rabbihî wal mu’minûn, kullun âmana billâhi wa malâ’ikatihî wa kutubihî wa rusulih, lâ nufarriqu bayna ahadin min rusulih, wa qâlû sami’nâ wa ata’nâ ghufrânaka rabbanâ wa ilaykal masîr.

Lâ yukallifullâhu nafsan illâ wus’ahâ, lahâ mâ kasabat wa ‘alayhâ maktasabat, rabbanâ lâ tu’âkhidhnâ in nasînâ aw akhta’nâ, rabbanâ wa lâ tahmil ‘alaynâ isran kamâ hamaltahu ‘alal-ladhîna min qablinâ, rabbanâ wa lâ tuhammilnâ mâ lâ tâqata lanâ bih, wa’fu ‘annâ, waghfir lanâ, warhamnâ, anta mawlânâ fansurnâ ‘alal qawmil kâfirîn.

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.'”

“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. [The believers say], ‘Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.'” (Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286)

Making it a habit to recite these verses, especially before going to sleep at night, will help us be under spiritual protection throughout the night.

Protection While Falling Asleep And During Sleep

Sleep is a state where the body rests, but the soul can be open to various influences. Therefore, there are supplications recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for protection before falling asleep and against fears that may occur during sleep.

Supplication When Going To Bed

The Noble Messenger (peace be upon him) used to recite various supplications when he went to bed. In a hadith narrated by Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), he recommended the following supplication specifically for protection against bad dreams, nightmares, and the negative influences of devils and jinn during sleep:

Allâhumma rabbas-samâwâtis-sab’i wa mâ azallat, wa rabbal-aradîna wa mâ aqallat, wa rabbash-shayâtîna wa mâ adallat, kun lî jâran min sharri khalqika kullihim jamî’an, an yafruta ‘alayya ahadun minhum aw an yabghiya, ‘azza jâruka, wa jalla thanâ’uka, wa lâ ilâha ghayruka, wa lâ ilâha illâ anta.

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and what they overshadow, Lord of the earths and what they carry, Lord of the devils and what they misguide! Be my Protector against the evil of all Your creation, lest any of them should hasten to transgress against me or oppress me. Mighty is Your protection, and glorious is Your praise. There is no god other than You; there is no god except You.” (Tirmidhi, Da’awat, 96)

This supplication is seeking refuge in Allah’s infinite power and protection, asking Him for shelter from the evil of all creation.

Supplication When Frightened During Sleep

Some people may experience frightening things or have nightmares during sleep. The companion Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) experienced a similar situation and sought advice from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). According to a narration in Imam Malik’s Muwatta, Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “O Messenger of Allah, I am frightened during my sleep (I have nightmares). What do you advise me to do?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised him to recite the following supplication:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ

A’ûdhu bi kalimâtillâhit-tâmmâti min ghadabihî wa ‘iqâbihî wa sharri ‘ibâdihî wa min hamazâtish-shayâtîni wa an yahdurûn.

“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His slaves, and from the whispers of the devils and lest they come near me (or afflict me).” (Muwatta, Shi’r, 9; Tirmidhi, Da’awat, 94)

Reciting this supplication, especially against night fears and nightmares, provides tranquility and security with Allah’s permission.

Protection In Specific Places: When Entering The Toilet

According to Islamic belief, places like toilets, garbage dumps, bathhouses, ruins, and graveyards are often frequented or inhabited by jinn and devils. Therefore, it is important to take spiritual precautions when entering such places. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite the following supplication when entering the toilet (place for relieving oneself):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

Allâhumma innî a’ûdhu bika minal-khubthi wal-khabâ’ith.

“(In the name of Allah) O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female devils (from filth and evil creatures).” (Bukhari, Wudu’, 9; Muslim, Hayd, 122)

This short and concise supplication allows a person to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of negative spiritual entities that may be present in such places. Adding “Bismillah” at the beginning is also recommended.

The Power Of Dhikr: Takbir, Tasbih, And Tahmid

One of Satan’s greatest goals is to distract people from remembering Allah. Especially during prayer (salah), he tries to disrupt a person’s concentration (khushu’) by whispering worldly matters into their mind. He uses various tricks to prevent or rush the tasbihat (saying Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar) performed after prayers. Therefore, the tasbih, takbir, and tahmid performed after prayers and during the day are powerful weapons against Satan.

In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained the virtue of the following dhikr:

“Whoever says one hundred times in a day:

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Lâ ilâhe illallâhu wahdehu lâ sharîka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘alâ kulli shay’in qadîr.

‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things,’ he will get the same reward as given for manumitting ten slaves; one hundred good deeds will be written in his account and one hundred sins will be deducted from his account, and it (his saying) will be a shield for him from Satan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed than him except one who does more than he.” (Bukhari, Da’awat, 54, Bad’ al-Khalq, 11; Muslim, Dhikr, 28)

This dhikr is a tremendous spiritual investment that both earns great rewards and provides effective protection against Satan throughout the day.

Against Satan’s Whispers: Surah Al-Ikhlas

Sometimes Satan can directly whisper doubts and suspicions into a person’s heart, especially trying to confuse them about matters like Allah’s existence, attributes, or destiny (qadar). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught a solution for such situations as well. In a hadith, it is recommended that when faced with such suggestions from Satan, one should recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and then lightly spit (like blowing air, without actual saliva) to the left three times. (See Muslim, Salam, 68)

Surah Al-Ikhlas most concisely expresses the oneness of Allah, His uniqueness, and His freedom from all imperfections:

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Qul huwallâhu ahad.

Allâhus-samad.

Lam yalid wa lam yûlad.

Wa lam yakun lahû kufuwan ahad.

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One,”

“Allah, the Eternal Refuge.”

“He neither begets nor is born,”

“Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'” (Al-Ikhlas, 112:1-4)

Reciting this surah strengthens the heart against the doubts and whispers Satan tries to instill by renewing the belief in Tawhid (Oneness of Allah).

The Protective Shields: Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq And Surah An-Nas)

Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, known as “Mu’awwidhatayn” (the two seek refuge), are recited specifically to seek refuge in Allah from external evils like envy (hasad), magic (sihr), the evil eye (nazar), and the evil of jinn and devils. The Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) frequently recited these two surahs and advised his companions and family to recite them as well. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:

“Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. When he got ill, he asked me to do that for him.” (Bukhari, Fada’il al-Qur’an 14, Tibb 39; Muslim, Salam 50)

Surah Al-Falaq

Qul a’ûdhu bi rabbil falaq.

Min sharri mâ khalaq.

Wa min sharri ghâsiqin idhâ waqab.

Wa min sharrin-naffâthâti fil ‘uqad.

Wa min sharri hâsidin idhâ hasad.

“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,”

“From the evil of that which He created,”

“And from the evil of darkness when it settles,”

“And from the evil of the blowers in knots,”

“And from the evil of an envier when he envies.'” (Al-Falaq, 113:1-5)

Surah An-Nas

Qul a’ûdhu bi rabbin-nâs.

Malikin-nâs.

Ilâhin-nâs.

Min sharril waswâsil khannâs.

Alladhî yuwaswisu fî sudûrin-nâs.

Minal jinnati wan-nâs.

“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,”

“The Sovereign of mankind.”

“The God of mankind,”

“From the evil of the retreating whisperer -“

“Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind -“

“From among the jinn and mankind.'” (An-Nas, 114:1-6)

Reciting these two surahs regularly, especially in the morning, evening, and before sleeping, places us under Allah’s protection against all kinds of evil that may come from both humans and jinn.

Final Word

As seen, our religion offers us many spiritual prescriptions to protect ourselves from the evil of jinn and Satan. Maintaining ablution, constantly remembering Allah, reciting the relevant supplications when entering and leaving the house, going to bed, entering the toilet, and keeping the protective verses and surahs of the Quran, especially Ayat al-Kursi, Amenerrasulu, and Mu’awwidhatayn, on our tongues will make us strong against these unseen enemies. Let us not forget that the greatest refuge and protector is Almighty Allah. When we turn to Him with complete submission and ask for His help through the supplications He has taught us, no evil can harm us with His permission. May my Lord protect us all from all visible and invisible evils.
