Near-Death Experience Confirming a Quranic Verse: “The World Is Not Real”

“The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement…” (Quran, 6:32)
Andy Petro’s near-death experience during a 1955 drowning incident eerily echoes the metaphysical truths revealed in the Quran.
It was supposed to be a joyful day by the lake. Instead, it became a journey into the depths of the human soul—and beyond. In 1955, a high school student’s brush with death led to one of the most profound and enduring spiritual testimonies ever recorded. Today, at age 84, Andy Petro shares his near-death experience (NDE) with remarkable clarity, and what he recalls may change how we view reality, life, and death itself.

Petro’s story doesn’t just captivate with vivid detail—it resonates deeply with verses from the Quran, particularly those questioning the nature of worldly life and emphasizing the eternal truth of the Hereafter.
The Moment It Began: Panic Beneath the Surface
The event took place during a school picnic in the summer of 1955. Andy and his classmates were celebrating graduation near a cold, clear lake. After lunch, his friends called him to join them on a floating platform in the lake. Initially hesitant due to the frigid water, Andy eventually dove in.
“The water was colder than I imagined,” he recounts. “I began swimming, but halfway there, a sharp cramp seized my body below the waist. I couldn’t move my legs. I started to sink.”
As he began to drown, his arms flailed for help. His friends waved back, thinking he was joking. “My lungs filled with water. Then everything changed. It wasn’t fear anymore. It was release.”
A Voice in the Deep: “Let Go, Andy”
As Andy drifted downward, he says he heard a calm, reassuring voice tell him to relax and let go. He resisted at first but eventually surrendered. At that precise moment, he claims to have separated from his physical body.
“I was suddenly floating in a tunnel, warm and peaceful,” Andy explains. “My body was beneath me, lifeless at the bottom of the lake—but I felt no fear, only freedom.”
The Tunnel of Light and Divine Presence
In the Quran, the moment of death is described as the soul’s transition from one world to another:
“Then why do you not (intervene) when the soul reaches the throat?” (Quran, 56:83)
Andy’s account mirrors this description. He remembers a radiant light at the end of the tunnel, a light that was not just visible but intelligent and full of love.
“It began communicating with me—not in words, but in feelings and thoughts. The light asked me why I was so sad during my time on Earth. It told me that life on Earth is not real, just a temporary stage—a game or a play.”
The Sphere of Reflection: Life Reviewed with Complete Awareness
Suddenly, Andy found himself inside a colossal sphere, suspended in space. Surrounding him were dozens of screens displaying scenes from his life. But this was not an ordinary playback.
“I could see everything I’d ever done—and feel how others felt in those moments. Their thoughts, their pain, their joy. Nothing was hidden. Everything was crystal clear.”
This vivid review echoes a Quranic concept found in Surah Al-Qiyamah:
“That Day, man will be informed of what he sent forth and kept back.” (Quran, 75:13)
A Profound Realization: “This Was Never the Real World”
The light then delivered the message that shook Andy to his core:
“You were sad in a place that wasn’t even real. You were there only briefly, to experience. You could have enjoyed it more.”
This aligns powerfully with the Quranic reminder:
“This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But the Hereafter is indeed the real life, if only they knew.” (Quran, 29:64)
Andy says he then realized that life is like a costume party—we wear different roles, different identities, and then we return to the same origin. “We are all from the same light,” he says. “We are one.”
A Universal Soul: “We Are All the Same”
Andy describes encountering other lights—countless, eternal, welcoming.
“They said, ‘Welcome home, Andy.’ I felt I had returned, not gone anywhere new.”
He realized that all 8 billion people on Earth were playing roles in a grand drama. “Different religions, races, and cultures are just costumes. When the play ends, we all take off our disguises and return to the same light.”
The Quran echoes this idea of unity:
“O mankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know one another.” (Quran, 49:13)
A Command from the Light: “You’re Going Back”
Despite his overwhelming peace, Andy was told by the light that he must return to Earth.
“I said I didn’t want to go. But the light insisted. Three times, it said, ‘You’re going back.’ Before the last word finished, I was back in my body.”
He woke up on the shore, coughing water, surrounded by panicked friends. Although he claimed he remembered nothing, Andy admits now:
“I remembered every moment. I just wasn’t ready to talk about it.”
Time Did Not Exist: Only Peace
Andy describes the realm he visited as timeless. “There was no past or future. Only now. And that now was infinite, peaceful, loving.”
He didn’t know it at the time, but what he experienced was a textbook near-death experience. It wasn’t until the 1970s, after reading a book on NDEs, that he realized others had been through similar journeys.
Today, he shares his story on various platforms and continues to inspire people around the world.
Science Debates, But the Soul Knows
The scientific community remains divided. Some researchers attribute NDEs to oxygen deprivation or brain chemistry. Others argue that the consistency of these experiences across cultures and religions suggests something more.
Organizations like the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) have cataloged thousands of similar testimonies—many of them aligning with spiritual revelations found in holy scriptures.
“Every soul shall taste death…” (Quran, 3:185)
Andy’s journey might be one of many, but it continues to shine a light on this ancient and universal truth.
