Similarly, a candle, while slowly consuming itself, illuminates and warms its surroundings. This carries the symbolism of love working patiently, gradually warming and enlightening the heart of the other person. Salt, known for its purifying and protective properties, is used with the intention of cleansing the coldness and negative energies between individuals. Required Steps and The Power of Intention

According to the tradition, one who wishes to perform this ritual should follow these steps:

Choose the Right Time: Wake up at an hour associated with love and affection (e.g., the hour of Venus or Jupiter) or in the pre-dawn hours of a Friday or Monday night. The tranquility of the night is most suitable for spiritual concentration.
Spiritual and Physical Cleansing: Perform a proper ablution (Wudu). This is both a physical and spiritual purification.
Prayer for Need (Salat al-Hajah): Perform a two-rak’ah prayer for the sake of Allah, with the intention of asking for your need to be fulfilled. After the prayer, ask God with all your heart for your intention to be realized through virtuous means.

Transliteration

Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm. Yuḥibbūnahum kaḥubbillāhi walladhīna āmanū ashaddu ḥubban lillāh, wa law yaralladhīna ẓalamū idh yarawnal-ʿadhāba annal-quwwata lillāhi jamīʿā.

Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. And if only they who have wronged would consider, when they see the punishment, that all power belongs to Allah. زُيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّهَوَاتِ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ وَالْبَنِينَ وَالْقَنَاطِيرِ الْمُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَالْخَيْلِ الْمُسَوَّمَةِ وَالْأَنْعَامِ وَالْحَرْثِ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسْنُ الْمَآبِ

Transliteration

Zuyyina lin-nāsi ḥubbush-shahawāti minan-nisā’i wal-banīna wal-qanāṭīril-muqanṭarati minadh-dhahabi wal-fiḍḍati wal-khaylil-musawwamati wal-anʿāmi wal-ḥarth, dhālika matāʿul-ḥayātid-dunyā, wallāhu ʿindahū ḥusnul-ma’āb.

Meaning

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return. (The Holy Qur’an, Surah Aal-i-Imran, 3:14)

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Transliteration

Qul in kuntum tuḥibbūnallāha fattabiʿūnī yuḥbibkumullāhu wa yaghfir lakum dhunūbakum, wallāhu ghafūrun raḥīm.

Meaning

Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (The Holy Qur’an, Surah Aal-i-Imran, 3:31)

وَأَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِّنِّي وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَىٰ عَيْنِي

Wa alqaytu ʿalayka maḥabbatan minnī wa lituṣnaʿa ʿalā ʿaynī.

Meaning

And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye. (Excerpt from The Holy Qur’an, Surah Taha, 20:39)

The Sugar Application for Reconciling Spouses and Families

The same verses can also be used for reconciling spouses, family members, or friends who are estranged or in severe disagreement. In this case, the method differs slightly:

Intention: The intention is made as, “to reconcile the relationship between [person A] and [person B], to warm their hearts to one another, and to place between them a love like that of Yusuf and Zulaikha.”
Material: Instead of black pepper, sugar, Turkish delight, or any sweet food item is used.
Application: The verses provided above are recited 41 times over this sweet food.
Serving: This enchanted sweet is then served to the people intended for reconciliation without their knowledge (e.g., in their tea, as part of a dessert, etc.). The symbolism of the sweet is the desire for their hearts and their relationship to become “sweet,” just as their mouths are sweetened.
