The Source of the Milk Prayer in Hadith
According to a narration from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I and Khalid bin Walid entered along with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to Maymuna’s house. Maymuna brought us a bowl of milk. The Prophet (peace be upon him) drank from it. I was on his right, and Khalid was on his left. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me:
“It is your turn to drink. However, if you wish, you may allow Khalid to have it first.”
I replied:
“I would not prefer anyone else over myself for drinking what remains from you.”
Then, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“When Allah gives food to someone, they should say: ‘O Allah, bless this food for us and provide us with something better than it.’ And when Allah gives someone milk to drink, they should say: ‘O Allah, bless this milk for us and give us more of it.’”
He further stated:
“There is nothing that serves as both food and drink except milk.” (Ibn Majah, Foods: 17)
The Prophet’s Milk Prayer
After drinking milk, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite the following supplication:
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ
Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu.
Translation: “O Allah, bless this milk for us and grant us more of it.”
This prayer, when recited after drinking milk, serves as a means of seeking blessings and increased provision from Allah.
Milk and Its Blessings
The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the nourishing qualities of milk, highlighting its ability to serve as both food and drink. The hadith stating, “There is nothing that serves as both food and drink except milk,” showcases its importance as a divine sustenance. Reciting this prayer while drinking milk is a recommended practice and a beautiful habit for Muslims to adopt.
Powerful Prayers for Sustenance and Blessings
The milk prayer is not only for consuming milk but can also be recited as a supplication for increased sustenance and blessings in general. Alongside other prayers taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) related to sustenance, this supplication can help believers attain abundant and lawful provisions.
By incorporating this Sunnah into our daily lives and reciting this prayer whenever we drink milk, we can seek Allah’s blessings and increase our provisions in accordance with Islamic teachings.
