Let us embark on this spiritual journey together and unveil the mysterious world of the Basmala in the light of the noble hadiths of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and authentic narrations.
The Basmala: A Gateway to Allah’s Greatest Name
Scholars of spirituality and the science of Havas state that the Basmala has a direct connection to Allah’s greatest name, the Ism al-A’zam. This is not an ordinary claim but a truth rooted in the most authentic narrations.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), describing the moment of revelation, said: “When Gabriel came to me with revelation, the first thing he placed in my heart was Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.” This shows that the Basmala is the essence and key to every divine message.
Upon a curious question from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (pbuh) explained the magnificence of the Basmala with this stunning analogy:
“Bismillah is one of the names of Allah. The closeness between it and Allah’s greatest name is like the closeness between the black and the white of the eye.”
This reveals what an indispensable gateway the Basmala is for a servant who wishes to reach the Ism al-A’zam.
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Transliteration: Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm
Meaning: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Revelation That Shook the Cosmos: What Happened When the Basmala Descended?
The descent of the Basmala to Earth was no ordinary event. According to narrations, the moment it was revealed, the angels in the heavens rejoiced greatly, the Sublime Throne (Arsh) trembled, and thousands of angels accompanied it. This was a manifestation of the divine weight and power carried by these words.
This cosmic event also resonated on Earth. According to a narration from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
“During the revelation of the Basmala, the mountains began to praise Allah. So much so that the people of Mecca and those in the region heard this praise… The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever recites Bismillah with sincere belief, the mountains praise Allah along with him. However, their praise is not heard.’”
This narration whispers to us that when the Basmala is recited, not only we but all of existence joins in that divine remembrance, and that the opening of the heart’s eye is needed to experience this spiritual reality.
A Divine Shield and Armor of Protection Against Hardships
The Basmala is not just a phrase to begin with; it is also a spiritual fortress where the believer takes refuge in their most difficult moments. In works written on the esoteric sciences and Havas, the protective power of the Basmala is given special importance.
A Supplication for Times of Distress
For a heart overwhelmed by life’s challenges and hardships, the prescription was given by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself, as narrated by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him):
“If you fall into a predicament and feel distressed, recite ‘Bismillahirrahmanirrahim’ along with ‘La hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil aliyyil azim.’ Due to this, Allah the Almighty turns away many kinds of calamities from the one who says it.”
The combination of these two blessed phrases is like a divine key that locks seventy doors of calamity, grief, and sorrow.
لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ
Transliteration: Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-aliyyil-aẓīm
Meaning: There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Great.
Protection from the Evil of the Jinn
In the science of Havas, it is accepted that the Basmala acts as a seal upon things. The narration from Safwan ibn Sulaym is quite enlightening on this matter:
“The jinn use people’s belongings and their clothes. When one of you takes an item of clothing or puts it down, let them say Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. For the name of Allah is a seal (so the jinn cannot approach it).”
The Science of Havas and the Esoteric Secrets of the Basmala
Scholars of Havas state that the letters and words of the Qur’an have not only apparent meanings but also esoteric secrets, including numerical values (abjad) and spiritual effects. The Basmala stands at the pinnacle of this science. Its composition of 19 letters is one of its most well-known secrets.
The following narration from Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) points to this secret:
“Whoever wants to be saved from the 19 angels of Hell (Zabaniyah), let them recite Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. So that for each of its letters, Allah may grant them a paradise…”
The 19 letters of the Basmala are seen as a spiritual shield against the 19 guardians of Hell. Each letter serves as a ransom for salvation from that terrifying punishment.
The Source of the Rivers of Paradise: The Miracle of the Letters
The most magnificent manifestation of the Basmala’s esoteric secrets is hidden in an event the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) experienced during his Ascension (Mi’raj). When the Prophet wondered about the source of the rivers of water, milk, wine, and honey he saw in Paradise, he was brought before a dome made of pearl by divine guidance. The dome had a lock, and when asked for the key, the answer was: “Its key is Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.”
When the Prophet (pbuh) recited the Basmala and entered, he saw that the four magnificent rivers flowed from the four pillars of the dome—that is, from the letters of the words that form the Basmala:
- The river of water flowed from the letter Mīm of “Bism,”
- The river of milk flowed from the letter Hā’ at the end of “Allah,”
- The river of wine flowed from the letter Mīm of “ar-Raḥmān,”
- The river of honey flowed from the letter Mīm of “ar-Raḥīm.”
This is a miraculous scene showing that the source, essence, and beginning of every blessing in Paradise is the Basmala. Indeed, these rivers are promised in the Holy Qur’an:
فِيهَا أَنْهَارٌ مِنْ مَاءٍ غَيْرِ آسِنٍ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِنْ لَبَنٍ لَمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ طَعْمُهُ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِنْ خَمْرٍ لَذَّةٍ لِلشَّارِبِينَ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِنْ عَسَلٍ مُصَفًّى
Transliteration: Fīhā anhārun min mā’in ghayri āsinin wa-anhārun min labanin lam yataghayyar ṭamuhu wa-anhārun min khamrin ladhdhatin lish-shāribīna wa-anhārun min asalin muṣaffan…
Meaning: Therein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey… (Surah Muhammad, 15)
Final Word
“Bismillahirrahmanirrahim” is a divine treasure whose full meaning could not be written even if the trees were pens and the seas were ink. It is not just a phrase; it is a refuge, a cure, a shield, a key, and the essence of the cosmos. When we bring it down from our tongues into our hearts, we are not merely starting a task; we are joining the praise of all existence, clothing ourselves in the armor of divine protection, and connecting to the source of the rivers of Paradise. To adorn our every moment with the Basmala in this consciousness will undoubtedly transform our lives into blessings and our hereafter into eternal bliss.
