Surah Al-Jinn: Its Havas and Secrets

The Quran, the holy scripture of Islam, is not only a guide for humanity but also a source of immense spiritual power and wisdom. Surah Al-Jinn, the seventy-second chapter, named after the Jinn who are its central theme, is one such chapter believed to hold profound secrets and special properties (havas). It is narrated that many venerable Islamic scholars and spiritual masters (Mashayikh-i Kiram) engaged with Surah Al-Jinn and, through its blessings, attained precious gifts and high spiritual stations. This article aims to present some of the knowledge found in ancient sources regarding the havas of Surah Al-Jinn, in a language understandable to the contemporary reader, while also highlighting specific methods and precautions.

What Is Surah Al-Jinn And Why Is It So Important?

Surah Al-Jinn was revealed in Mecca and consists of 28 verses. It primarily discusses a group of jinn who listened to the Quran, embraced faith, and acknowledged the oneness of Allah, the truth of prophethood, and the Day of Judgment. This Surah informs us that jinn, like humans, are beings responsible for faith and obedience.

The Surah begins as follows:

قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا

يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا

Transliteration:

Qul ūḥiya ilayya annahu stamaʿa nafarun mina l-jinni fa-qālū innā samiʿnā qurʾānan ʿajaban.

Yahdī ilā r-rushdi fa-āmannā bihi wa-lan nushrika bi-rabbinā aḥadan.

Meaning:

“(O Muhammad!) Say: ‘It has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened (to the Qur’an). They said, ‘We have really heard a wonderful Recital!'”

“‘It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein: We shall not join (in worship) any gods with our Lord.'” (Quran 72:1-2)

The importance of Surah Al-Jinn lies both in its theological messages and in the powerful effects attributed to it in the spiritual realm. For those engaged in the science of havas, this Surah holds a special place.

The Basic Havas of Surah Al-Jinn: Its Virtues And Spiritual Doors

According to ancient texts, it is believed that regular and proper recitation of Surah Al-Jinn can open many spiritual doors. These properties may manifest according to the individual’s intention, sincerity, and adherence to the prescribed conditions.

Forty-One-Day Spiritual Retreat And Communication With The Jinn Realm

One of the most well-known practices involves reciting Surah Al-Jinn 41 times daily for 41 consecutive days. It is said that for one who adheres to this method, with the permission of Allah Almighty, the inhabitants of the jinn world, and even jinn kings, may become subservient. However, there is an important condition: after the 41 days are completed, one must continue to recite it at least once every day.

If, during this 41-day period, the person observes a fast with riyadah (ascetic discipline and special worship to train the self) and remains in khalwah (seclusion from people for worship), it is said that at the end of 41 days, the jinn kings will appear visibly (ayanen) and fulfill all legitimate desires.

Even if one does not fast or enter complete khalwah, if this blessed Surah is recited in a calm, clean, and secluded place, the following benefits are reported to occur:

  • One attains high esteem and respect among both humans and jinn.
  • One is kept safe from the evil of all malevolent beings and wicked individuals.

Surah Al-Jinn As A Means Of Healing

One of the healing properties of Surah Al-Jinn is directed towards individuals affected by the negative influence of jinn. It is narrated that if this blessed Surah is recited once with sincerity in the presence of a person afflicted by jinn, then by the permission of Allah Almighty, that person will not be troubled by jinn again, and their household will be protected from further harm.

A Key For The Acceptance Of Supplications

After the aforementioned 41-day special practice, reciting Surah Al-Jinn one, three, or five times with the intention of fulfilling any legitimate need (hajat) can, by the command of Allah, become a means for that wish to be granted.

The Power To Subjugate Creatures (Taskhir)

“Taskhir” means to bring something under one’s influence or to make it subservient. Surah Al-Jinn is described as an “iksir-i azam” (the greatest elixir) in this regard. For example, it is stated that if, after the 41-day practice, it is recited once over an animal, the animal will immediately become tame and will not leave the reciter’s side. This indicates that the Surah may have an effect not only on unseen beings but also on visible creatures.

The Virtues Of Making It A Daily Litany (Wird)

It is reported that whoever makes this blessed Surah a daily wird (a regularly recited prayer or dhikr) and continues to recite it at least once every day will observe many great benefits and spiritual developments in their life.

Advanced Spiritual Experiences With Surah Al-Jinn

Certain practices (amal) with Surah Al-Jinn can open doors to deeper spiritual experiences and secrets. Such practices usually require more intense riyadah, khalwah, and dedication.

The Opening Of The Spiritual Eye (Basirah) And A Journey To The Unseen Realm

It is narrated that for one who fasts with riyadah (abstinence) in a place of khalwah for three days, performs ghusl (ritual bath) daily, and recites Surah Al-Jinn 41 times each day, their spiritual eye (qalb gözü or basirah) will be opened. Muslim jinn may come and guide the person through the unseen realm (alam al-ghayb), revealing many hidden secrets. The “spiritual eye” refers to the ability to perceive spiritual truths.

Attaining Sustenance From The Unseen (Ghayb)

Certain practices are also described for overcoming financial difficulties and obtaining sustenance from the unseen:

  1. It is said that if a person enters a place of khalwah, fasts with riyadah, performs ghusl daily, and recites this blessed Surah 300 times every day for 7 days, and thereafter continues to recite it 7 times every night, they will find a gold coin from the unseen world under their pillow each morning. However, it is a condition that this secret must not be revealed to anyone; otherwise, this blessing will cease.
  2. In a similar practice, it is stated that one who fasts with riyadah in a place of khalwah for 7 days and recites Surah Al-Jinn 300 times daily will also have a gold coin placed under their pillow every day from the 7th day onwards.

Such narrations can be understood as experiences that test a person’s trust in Allah (tawakkul) and sincerity, as well as virtues like patience and the ability to keep secrets.

Subjugating Humans, Jinn, And Fairies (Peri)

It is mentioned in sources that through Surah Al-Jinn, humans, jinn, and even fairies (peri) can be brought under one’s influence (taskhir). This could mean gaining their friendship, their assistance, or protection from their potential harm.

Communication And Covenant With Fairies

For those who wish to perform taskhir of fairies (to bring them under influence and make a pact with them), the following method is described:

For 21 days, one fasts with riyadah in a place of khalwah. Ghusl is performed daily. Every day, this blessed Surah is recited 21 times, followed by sending Salawat (blessings) upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) 1001 times.

An example of Salawat Sharif:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

Transliteration:

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli sayyidinā Muḥammad.

Meaning:

“O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon our Master Muhammad and the family of our Master Muhammad.”

It is narrated that on the 21st day of this practice, the place of khalwah will be engulfed in a light as if the sun has risen, and the fairy kings will appear in the person’s presence with their attendants. A mutual covenant (ahd) is made. The fairies usually impose conditions such as: reciting Surah Al-Jinn once every day, avoiding things that would disturb spiritual beings (like filth, bad odors, noise), and abstaining from animal-based foods (meat, milk, eggs, honey, etc.).

If these conditions are accepted, the agreement is finalized. If not accepted, the fairies depart. After accepting the conditions, if the person wishes, they can request a fairy maiden from among them for their service, and one will step forward. Thereafter, it is said that wherever the person goes, that fairy maiden will be devoted to them and accompany them, fulfilling any legitimate need instantly. If desired, they may take the person to the abodes of fairies, above the clouds, and bring food and drink from the unseen.

Subjugating An Indian Jinn

It is stated that whoever recites Surah Al-Jinn without the Basmala (i.e., without saying “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim” at the beginning) 5144 times, an Indian jinn will immediately become subservient (musahhar) to them. However, it is strongly emphasized that such practices carry very serious risks, and the person must take extremely strong spiritual protective measures; otherwise, they could be destroyed. Omitting the Basmala can be seen as closing one of the doors of mercy and protection, making such practices exceedingly dangerous and absolutely not to be attempted by the unqualified.

Friendship With Pure Spirits (Arwah-i Tayyiba)

“Arwah-i tayyiba” means pure and good spirits. To establish a spiritual connection and friendship with them, it is recommended to recite Surah Al-Jinn three times daily: once after the Fajr (dawn) prayer, once after the Dhuhr (noon) prayer, and once after the Isha (night) prayer. After continuing this for some time, it is narrated that the arwah-i tayyiba will come and befriend that person, fulfilling any legitimate need by the permission of Allah.

Conditions To Observe For Practices (Amal) With Surah Al-Jinn

For the practices (amal) undertaken to benefit from the havas of Surah Al-Jinn to be successful and safe, it is essential to adhere to certain fundamental conditions. These conditions are necessary for both spiritual preparation and the correct execution of the practice:

  1. Frequent Recitation of Salawat Sharif: Sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) frequently is a means for spiritual doors to open and for practices to be accepted.
  2. Khalwah and Riyadah Fasting: Especially for intensive practices undertaken for a specific purpose (if stipulated for the amal), retreating into khalwah (being in a secluded, solitary place away from people) and observing a riyadah fast (eating sparingly of lawful and pure foods, sometimes completely abstaining from animal products) is important. This disciplines the self (nafs) and increases spiritual sensitivity.
  3. Burning Pleasant Incense (Bukhoor): Burning fragrant incense (bukhoor) during recitation both purifies the space and creates an atmosphere pleasing to spiritual beings. Natural resins like amber, agarwood (oud), or frankincense are preferable.
  4. Performing Ghusl (Ritual Bath) Daily or Nightly: Being constantly in a state of purity from major ritual impurity (janabah) and minor ritual impurity (hadath), i.e., having performed ghusl, is a fundamental condition for spiritual practices. Utmost attention should be paid to this, especially during periods of intensive recitation.
  5. No Menstruating Women in the Place of Recitation: Situations that could compromise the cleanliness and sanctity of the place of practice should be avoided. In this context, it is stated that menstruating women should not enter such special areas of practice.
  6. Absolutely No Worldly Talk: During recitation and practice, one must be completely focused on the task at hand and strictly avoid unnecessary and worldly conversations. This is imperative to maintain concentration and spiritual connection.

These conditions are of great importance both for ensuring the effectiveness of the practice and for protection against possible negative spiritual influences.

The Science Of Havas And Surah Al-Jinn: From The Language Of The Sources

The science of Havas (Ilm al-Khawwas) is a branch of knowledge aimed at obtaining various spiritual, psychic, and even material benefits through the recitation of Quranic verses, the Beautiful Names of Allah (Asma-ul Husna), and certain special prayers in specific numbers and methods. This knowledge has been elaborated in Islamic civilization, particularly in the works of scholars such as Al-Ghazali and Al-Buni, and in many later books of the “Gencine-i Esrar” (Treasury of Secrets), “Kenzü’l-Havâs” (Treasure of Properties), and “Mecmuatü’l-Ahzâb” (Compendium of Supplications and Litanies) genres.

For instance, works like “Shams al-Ma’arif” by Imam Ahmad al-Buni are among the most well-known in this field, though their content and use require careful consideration. Such works may contain detailed information and various formulas (tartib) regarding the havas of Surahs like Surah Al-Jinn. However, this information is generally considered part of the “hidden sciences” (ulum-u hafiyyah), which can be difficult, and even risky, to understand and apply without the guidance of a spiritual mentor (murshid).

The information conveyed about the havas of Surah Al-Jinn often begins with phrases like, “O dear one, know that!” and emphasizes that this knowledge should only be used by those who are qualified, with a great sense of responsibility and piety (taqwa). Indeed, the original text also expressed this sensitivity by stating, “O dear one, the havas of this noble surah are many, but I have not written the others lest they fall into the hands of the unqualified.”

Final Word

Surah Al-Jinn, as one of the miraculous expressions of the Holy Quran, is a source of guidance and mercy for believers, both in its wording and its meaning. Concurrently, the special secrets and powers (havas) attributed to this Surah within Islamic spiritual tradition are subjects that must be approached with profound respect and great caution.

The information presented in this article is based on narrations passed down from ancient sources. It is essential that such practices are approached under the guidance of a spiritual mentor, in accordance with one’s own spiritual constitution and the purity of one’s intention, and with a profound sense of responsibility. It must not be forgotten that the greatest power and refuge is Allah Almighty alone, and all good and evil manifest by His will. The essence of supplications and practices is a sincere turning towards Allah and the desire to earn His pleasure. Such knowledge, beyond satisfying curiosity, should serve as a means to strengthen one’s bond with the Creator and to contemplate His infinite power. In all spiritual pursuits, remaining steadfast on the right path (istikamah) and preserving the sacred legal boundaries (shari’ah) are the most fundamental principles.
